Michael died on November 21, 2008 during a Sigma Nu fraternity hazing at Utah State University. He was 18 years old and had started college less than 3 months earlier.

As a family united, we know, now, that hazing can only be addressed through active education on and off campus, open community-wide discussion, robust hazing laws, deferred rush at colleges and universities willing to be part of the solution, and county prosecutors committed to doing their job well.

1.5 millions High School students are hazed or bullied each year, 55% of college students involved in clubs, sports, and academic clubs experience hazing, with 82% involving binge drinking, and 2 of every 5 students say they are aware of hazing taking place on their campus. As of February 12, 2010, the number of fraternity or sorority hazing-related deaths stood at 90 – 100.*

Defer Rush for First-Year Students

Our proposal is to require first year students to complete 12 semester hours of coursework with a GPA of at least 2.25 before participating in Greek rush (new member recruitment). Such a requirement is often called ‘deferred rush’ because first year students are ineligible to participate in fraternity/sorority new member recruitment until their second semester on campus. This requirement would apply to all first year students, including transfer students. Fraternities and sororities would still be allowed to conduct new member recruitment during Fall Semester but they would be precluded from recruiting and offering bids to anyone who has completed less than 12 semester hours and a GPA of less than 2.25.  Read more...
